Questions about sewer backup cleanup
How do I know if the blockage is in the main line or just one fixture?
Run water at an upper fixture and watch the lowest one in the house. If a basement drain, shower or laundry standpipe rises, the blockage is downstream of both.
Why does sewage come up through my floor drain and not the toilet?
Water in a blocked line rises until it finds the lowest opening, and a floor drain usually sits lower than any fixture.
Who is responsible, me or the city?
The general rule is that you own the lateral from the house to the property line or the main connection, and the municipality owns the main.
Why does it back up every time it rains hard?
Rain should not enter a sanitary sewer at all. A rain linked pattern points at a combined sewer system, at storm water leaking into cracked pipe, or at a public main that surcharges when it fills.
Should I open the outside cleanout to relieve the pressure?
No. Do not do this yourself. A blocked line holds pressure behind that cap, and removing it can release sewage over you and into your yard.
What is a backwater valve and do I need one?
It is a one way valve installed in your drain line that closes when flow tries to reverse.
Will clearing the line stop it happening again?
Sometimes, and often only for a while. Cabling cuts an opening through roots or grease that then rebuild, while jetting cleans the pipe wall more thoroughly.
